Your first day of school was probably a while back, but do you have any recollection of it? You took some crayons, a pencil case and a lunch packed by your mum.
To be honest, your first day of construction won’t look too much different! While you’ll drop the crayons and hopefully be making your own lunch, or buying it from the wicked bakery down the road, here’s what you’ll bring on your first day of training.
- Notepad
Don’t worry: you’re not expected to be a poet or author who writes down hundreds and hundreds of pages of notes, but it’s still essential to bring a notepad nonetheless. You’ll be learning a lot of stuff on your first day of training and, while keeping mental notes is great, most of us benefit from taking a few notes.
- Pen
Don’t be that guy who’s asking everyone if he can borrow a pen, only to never return it. Don’t forget your own writing utensils!
- Bottle of water
Keeping hydrated is one of the main ways to keep your brain functioning on your first big day of training. Don’t risk dehydration by only drinking coffee or energy drinks – make sure you’ve got a bottle of water on you at all times.
- Lunch
Whether you pack your lunch, your mum still packs it, or you’re heading to the tuckshop, we can guarantee you that you’ll have worked up an appetite by lunchtime. Make sure you’ve got plenty of fuel to keep you going.
- Sunscreen
Sunscreen is a must-have on your first day of training – and every other day of training, in fact. Construction professionals understand the importance of sunscreen as they work in a field where sun exposure is high. Being outside all day, especially over spring and summer, can be dangerous if you’re not sun-smart, which is why sunscreen is applied liberally at the start of the day. Working outdoors increases your risk of skin cancer, so please bring that tube of sunscreen every day!
- Licence or ID
To set up the administrative side, you’ll need to bring some form of identification – a driver’s licence or proof of age card usually does the trick.
- The right attitude
Had a feeling this one was coming? You were right: bringing a good attitude to studying a construction course is one of the most important things to do. You chose to be here, so it’s up to you to make the most of it.
