Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What does a C1 crane ticket cover?

It covers slewing mobile cranes up to 100 tonnes and incorporates all equipment covered by the C6 licence, including non‑slewing cranes, telehandlers with jibs and vehicle‑loading cranes.

How is a C1 licence different from a C6 or C2 licence?

A C1 licence permits operation of slewing cranes up to 100 tonnes, whereas a C6 licence is limited to 60 tonnes and a C2 licence is limited to 20 tonnes. C1 also includes the non‑slewing cranes and telehandlers covered by C6, making it more versatile.

What are the prerequisites for a C1 licence?

You must be 18 years or older, hold a Dogging (DG) licence, hold a current C6 crane licence and provide at least two years’ documented experience operating a C2 or C6 crane. You must also pass an LLN assessment, provide photo ID and meet medical fitness requirements.

How long is the C1 training course?

Typically four days including theory, practical training and assessment. Students are also required to complete pre‑learning modules before attending.

Is government funding available?

Government funding and subsidies may be available depending on your state and your eligibility. Check with your RTO and relevant agencies for details.

Can international students apply for a C1 licence?

Yes. International students on valid visas can enrol in C1 training, but they must meet the same prerequisites and ensure their visa permits high‑risk work training.

How do I renew or upgrade my licence?

High‑risk work licences must be renewed every five years. To upgrade to C0 (unlimited capacity including tower cranes), you’ll need to complete the C0 course and accumulate sufficient experience operating C1 cranes.

What happens if I operate without a high‑risk licence?

Operating without the appropriate HRWL is illegal and can lead to heavy fines, licence suspension and legal action. Employers can also face penalties for allowing unlicensed operators on site.

Where can I take the C1 course in Victoria?

Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) in Melbourne and regional Victoria, including our facility in Riddells Creek, offer regular C1 courses with small class sizes and modern equipment.

What support do students get?

Our RTO provides pre‑learning materials, hands‑on tuition from experienced trainers, and guidance through the licensing application process. We also assist with the LLN assessment and help secure funding where available.
